New rules and regulations significantly affect adults with disabilities who receive Federal funding for residential services (group homes and supported living services), day programs, and vocational work sites. Arguably the most significant provision is that “individuals have freedom and support to control their schedules and activities and have access to food any time.” For persons with PWS this provision can be deadly.
The key to keeping your loved one safe is having adequate “proof” or documentation written into your Regional Center’s Individual Program Plan (IPP). Without this documentation, providers may have no legal choice but to allow your loved one unfettered access to food whenever they request it.
